Falcons Stand Pat on Deadline Day After Street Deal

At 4-4 on the season, the Atlanta Falcons have stood pat on the NFL's trade deadline day after making a move Monday to help rebuild their depth at defensive tackle after Grady Jarrett's season-ending knee injury.

The Falcons acquired Kentavius Street in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, in a deal that saw them send a conditional 2024 sixth-round pick in exchange for the 27-year-old.

However, even after adding Street to a defensive tackle position that still boasts veterans like Calais Campbell and David Onyemata and younger players like Ta'Quon Graham and LaCale London, many still expected the Falcons and general manager Terry Fontenot to remain active.

Just last season, ahead of the deadline, when the Falcons were dealing with an injury crisis at cornerback, Fontenot brought in Rashad Fenton from the Kansas City Chiefs. While Fenton ultimately didn't stay in Atlanta long-term, the Falcons managed to use the deadline as a short-term fix, which they arguably could've done this year, but where?

A move for an additional edge rusher would've made the most sense as it still stands out as a potential weakness for a Falcons defense that has been much improved. The Falcons are still among the bottom in the league in sacks with 15, which is possibly one of the reasons that led to their reported interest in Washington Commanders edge rusher Montez Sweat.

However, the Chicago Bears beat the Falcons to the punch Tuesday, as they agreed to a deal with the Commanders that saw them give up their 2024 second-round pick.

So, as the trade deadline has come to a close, the Falcons are in the midst of preparing for Sunday's game versus the Minnesota Vikings. Kickoff inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium is set for 1 p.m. EST.
