Fielder's Dream: $214 Million Deal In Motown
There was no way a major league general manager was going pay Albert Pujols money to Prince Fielder, right?
Right – sort of.
Apparently a GM didn't make such a deal. Agent Scott Boras went upstairs to Detroit Tigers owner Mike Ilitch to get nearly $24 million per year to Cecil Fielder’s porcine son.
That was stupid money, especially for a team that now has to move the inert Miguel Cabrera to third base.
We knew this team would miss first baseman Victor Martinez this season as he recovers from knee repairs, but $214 million for Fielder? Wow.
Here is what pundits had to say about this on Twitter:
Eric Stangel: “It's no coincidence that Prince Fielder signed his new deal on National Peanut Butter Day . . .”
Justin Verlander: “Was on the golf course when I heard... Wasn't playing too well at the time. The prince news turned my day around!”
Joe Strauss: “Hard to believe a team spends $214 million to create more questions than it answers. #Tigers #RotoBall”
Jeff Schultz: “Geez, I like Prince Fielder -- but nine years and $214 million? Potential for biggest financial disaster in Detroit since GM.”
Joel Sherman: “Rival execs think Fielder was done above GM Dombrowski's head, just like other Boras clients were: Magglio, Pudge, Damon #Tigers.”
Lynn Henning: “Mike Ilitch turning 83 in July, wanting a World Series way more than he ever wanted a Stanley Cup, just wrote a check for all the Tostitos.”
Jon Paul Morosi: “Dave Dombrowski said last week that the #Tigers didn’t view Miguel Cabrera as an everyday third baseman. But now . . .”
Deadspin: “Which Will Prince Fielder And Miguel Cabrera Reach First: 600 Combined Homers Or 600 Combined Pounds?”
The Fake ESPN: “As much as the Rangers wanted to acquire Prince Fielder, there just wasn't enough room for both him and Khloe Kardashian in the same area.”
Mark Whicker: “Fielder is the first large structure to come to downtown Detroit since Hudson's left.”
Andrew Baggerly: “I’m told the Giants never got involved in talks for Prince Fielder.”
Keith Law: “But they're still trying to sign his dad.”
